Timeline
1789- Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. George Washington became president. Congress created the Department of War, State and the Treasury. The Judiciary Act of 1789 which created the Supreme Court staffed by a chief justice and five associates justices.
1792- George Washington reelected president.
1793- The Federalist Party and Democratic Republican Party was created. British impressment of American ships begins. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin.
1794- At the Fallen Timbers, Wayne’s forces crushed Indian resistance in the Northwest Territory, and the Native Americans were compelled to sign the Treaty of Greenville, formerly ceding the land that becomes Ohio to the American government. The Whiskey Rebellion is the U.S. government’s first act to raising an army which crushed the farmer’s protest.
1796- Washingtons Farewell Address and John Adams became president.
1797- Quasi-War and XYZ Affair
1799- Convention of Mortefontaine
1800- Jefferson becomes president
1801- Start of Barbary War
1802-The Judiciary Act is repealed
1803- Ohio was admitted into the Union, Louisiana Purchase and the first time the Supreme Court enforced judicial review during the Marbury v. Madison decision.
1804- Thomas Jefferson reelected president.The twelfth Amendment ratified and Lewis and Clark expedition started. Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel.
1805-The Barbary War ends which gives the U.S. worldwide respect and national pride.
1806-1807- The British government issued a series of trade regulations known as the Orders in Councils. The French responded to Britain’s regulations with the Berlin Decree of 1806 and Milan Decree of 1807 known as the Continental System. The Chesapeake-Leopard Affair occurred. The Embargo Act of 1807 causes turmoil in the U.S. Fulton and Livingston successfully propelled the first steamboat.
1808- James Madison becomes president.
1809- Embargo Act repealed
1811- Harrison defeats Indians at Tippecanoe
1812- James Madison reelected president. War of 1812, Louisiana was admitted as a state
1813- Perry destroys the British fleet at the battle of Put-in-Bay. Boston Manufacturing Company founds cotton mill in Waltham, Massachusetts.
1814- Jackson crushed the Creek Indians at Horseshoe Bend, British Marines burn Washington, D.C. and the Hartford Convention takes place. The Treaty of Ghent ends the War of 1812.
1815- Battle of Orleans and the end of the War of 1812
1816- James Monroe became president. Henry Clay’s American System
1817- Rush-Bagot Agreement, General Andrew Jackson moves in pursuit of the Seminole Indians.
1818- The Anglo-American Convention occurred. Jackson occupied East Florida then Secretary Adams informed there will be no further conflict if the Spanish ceded East Florida to the U.S.
1819- The Adams-Onis Treaty, Dartmouth College v. Woodward and McCulloch v. Maryland occurred.
1820- James Monroe reelected president. Missouri Compromise
1822- The creation of the mill in Lowell, Massachusetts.
1823- The Monroe Doctrine proclaimed.
1824- John Quincy Adams elected president. The Supreme Court decides on the Gibbons v. Ogden case.
