Territorial Expansion
At the Battle of Fallen Timbers, Anthony Wayne’s forces crushed the Native American forces in The Northwest Territory, and the native people were forced to cede the land that will become Ohio to the American government. Jefferson in 1803 purchased the Louisiana Purchase for fifteen million which gave western farmers permanent access to the Mississippi River waterway, removed the French from the western border of America and gave Americans an opportunity to expand. America gained the area between the Mississippi and the Perdido River by claiming it was a part of the Louisiana Purchase which later became Alabama. Lewis and Clark went on an expedition west to the Pacific Coast to collect data on the Louisiana Purchase and its resources. James Monroe purchased Florida from the Spanish in 1819 for five million by signing the Adams-Onis Treaty.
